Basta Ya!

Artist: Reyes
Track Title: Basta Ya!

Sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairmen James Sensenbrenner (RWI) the “Border Protection, Anti Terrorist and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005” (H.R. 4437) also known as the Sensenbrenner Bill was passed in December 2005 during a late night vote 239 to 182. The bill instead of providing a comprehensive, effective approach to immigration is a laundry list of racist and intrusive provisions concocted by the most extreme immigrant restrictionists in Congress. The bill not only anti immigrant and anti Mexican, it would make felons of millions of people in the United States.

In response to this bill, on March 10th 2006 nearly 500,000 people poured into the streets of Chicago in protest, shutting down downtown Chicago for nearly an entire day. Throughout the United States pro-immigrant groups have been responding to this anti-immigrant bill in a variety of ways from lobbying to mass mobilization. It is crucial in the next two weeks to put pressure (calls and letters) on Senate Judiciary members to support the Kennedy/McCain/Gutierrez bill and object guest worker type bill. Simultaneously it is imperative that we keep the pressure at the grassroots level organizing rallies, marches, door to door education and creative forms of artistic expression to resist and transform these negative polices.

As a part of the positive energy from the March 10th mobilization in Chicago, Chicano/Mexican poet, activist and hip-hop artist Reyes has created the hip-hop track titled Basta Ya! Reyes is a member Zocalo Urbano, a project of Centro Sin Fronteras which has been key in the creation of campaign to ensure the nation knows that the "immigration debate" is about real, human families and their struggle to stay together. He hopes the song will be used to create awareness about this very important issue. Basta Ya is a true reflection of the mass mobilization on March 10th and is a critique of all of those who oppose immigrant rights.

Please feel free to play, burn, email, post and bump this track. The more people that are educated about the Sensenbrenner Bill the better chance we have to see a more positive world.

No to the minutemen! No to Sensenbrenner Bill!

Some of the most destructive provisions of the bill would:

• Criminalize all violations of immigration law, even if the violation was unintentional or the result of processing delays
• Make any relative, employer, co-worker, clergymen, lawyer or friend of an undocumented immigrant into an “alien smuggler” and a criminal
• Give power to immigration officials within 100 miles of the border to expel without a hearing anyone believed to be a recently arrived illegal immigrant (expedited removal)
• Expand mandatory detention to apply to non citizens arriving at a port of entry or “along” the border
• Limit the basic rights of immigrants to judicial review, even by the by constitutionally guaranteed writ of habeas corpus
• Requires state and local police to enforce federal immigration Law
